The main reason is anthocyanin, a natural pigment found in black currant and other berries.
Consumption of black currant juice significantly improves the health of our brain and allows fighting against various diseases, say scientists.
The juice from these small black currents stimulates the brain function, according to a study published in the journal –Journal of Functional Foods written by researchers from New Zealand Institute for Research on herbs and foods and their colleagues from the British Northumbria University.
To come to this conclusion, the scientists have followed 36 people aged 18 to 35 years over three week period whose task was – to drink a glass of 140 ml of black currant juice once a week, before they run a series of tests.
Experts were visibly surprised by the results. Namely, consumption of the juice had major positive effects on the cognitive abilities of the participants, and in just one hour after consumption, the blood analysis have shown increased concentrations of monoamine oxidases.
It is known that these neurotransmitters (norepinephrine dopamine and serotonin) affect not only the regulation of mood, but also the development of certain neurodegenerative diseases such as the Parkinson’s disease.
Scientists link this phenomenon to the influence of anthocyanin that has the ability to inhibit certain enzymes – monoamine oxidases.
It is important to say that all types of currant have the same effect – states Anthony Watson, one of the study authors adding that another ongoing study is conveyed to determine the duration of this effect.
