Walnuts have a level of antioxidant polyphenols that is twice higher than the one contained in all other types of nuts.
Unfortunately, people do not have the habit to eat walnuts every day.
Walnuts have a level of antioxidant polyphenols that is twice higher than the one contained in all other types of nuts. This makes them able to help the organism fight against free radicals that harm cells and cause diseases, all of which has been shown by the research carried out by the University of Pennsylvania.
Nuts, such as almonds, peanuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, and cashews, are also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and proteins, however, scientists point out that people do not consume these nuts in sufficient quantities, as Independent reports.
“Our advice is to eat 5 walnuts a day”-says the head of the research, Dr. Joe Vinson.
Previous research has shown that the consumption of walnuts can significantly decrease the signs of aging, and at the same time protect from heart diseases and some types of cancer.
Soon after it was found out that just seven walnuts a day are sufficient to prevent one from developing heart diseases, these nuts were proclaimed to be a superfood. In fact, nuts are considered the most perfect food that can be found in nature for a long time.
It has also been found out that from all other nuts, walnuts are the ones that contain the highest amount of antioxidants. In addition, whenever we talk about healthy foods for the heart, we always list walnuts among the first three healthiest ones.
Apart from being rich in antioxidants, walnuts are as well rich in healthy fibers, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the studies have shown that the regular consumption of walnuts may decrease the risk of developing heart diseases, some types of cancer, and Type 2 diabetes.
An interesting fact is that the walnut fruit itself resembles a miniature brain, and today it is well-known that this nut helps in the development of more than thirty neurotransmitters of brain function.
In the latest research, the scientists of the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, have analyzed and evaluated the antioxidants contained in several types of nuts: walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, macadamias, cashews, and pecans.
The study leader, Dr. Joe Vinson, said: “Walnuts are ranked in the top foods, ahead of all other types of food. A handful of walnuts contains almost twice the amount of antioxidants contained in a handful of any other type of nut. Unfortunately, people do not consume walnuts as much as they should. Our research shows that a healthy diet should include a higher amount of walnut consumption.”
Dr. Vinson’s team has found out that apart from the amount of antioxidants contained in walnuts, they are also superior when it comes to the antioxidants’ strength. The antioxidants contained in walnuts are 15 times stronger that the vitamin E that has been known as a very strong antioxidant.
Scientists point out that the advantage of walnuts is that they are consumed raw, that is, unprocessed, and thus they are most effective. All other forms of walnuts, that include their roasting, decrease their effectiveness.
Many people avoid the consumption of walnuts because they think that these can increase one’s weight. However, walnuts contain healthy polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats that don’t clog blood vessels as saturated fats do. If you consume walnuts, you won’t gain on weight but on the contrary, you can lose weight because they can help you feel satiated for a longer period.
“Seven walnuts a day is the ideal amount that is necessary to get the maximum of the benefits offered by these nuts”- adds Dr. Vinson.
The fruit of the walnut contains a high level of oils (55-65%), as well as high-quality proteins (15%), carbohydrates, and it is also rich in potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins B and C.
The leaves of walnuts contain a strong yellowish oil that has tannins, acids, and compounds with hot and bitter taste.
Walnut leaves also contain non-degradable healing components and because of this they are used for the preparation of various extracts and remedies.
It is best to use walnut leaves while they are young, green and fresh.
