In many everyday foods that are on our table, a chemical that causes tumor was discovered. It is a chemical called acrylamide, and can be found in coffee, potato chips, fried potatoes, crackers and even in some foods for babies. This dangerous compound is produced during the thermal heating while frying these foods. Children are the most exposed because of the low body weight. EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) confirmed the danger from acrylamide and already begun to propose new laws that will be a subject to supervision in the food industry, reports Daily Mail.
In the UK, food producers are already under pressure to change the way of processing food for the new process to reduce the amounts of acrylamide.
Why is this a dangerous compound? – “Acrylamide, when consumed orally is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and is distributed to all the vital organs, where is being metabolized. Glycidamide that occurs in the process causes genetic mutations and tumors that we see on the laboratory animals,” explains Dr. Diana Bedfort which is the head of the Committee of EFSA, which deals with the research on acrylamide.
