Okra, or otherwise known as lady’s fingers or gumbo, is a green plant from the hibiscus and cotton family. This tropical fruit originates from North-East Africa and it can be found throughout the whole year. It’s prepared stewed or fried, boiled or pickled.


In fact, okra is a real nutritional treasure. That is, it contains 21 mg of vitamin C, 80 mg of foliate, 60 mg of magnesium, 2 grams of protein, 7.6 grams of carbohydrates, and 3 grams of dietary fiber. The fruit contains no calories and little fat.

The okra plant is highly beneficial for the overall wellbeing of people because it improves the functioning of the immune system and it strengthens it in the same time. Hence, it successfully reduces the cholesterol levels, controls diabetes, lowers the glucose levels, and prevents kidney issues.

Moreover, okra is rich in potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. And, okra is known to balance blood sugar levels in cases of type 1, 2, and gestational diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unfortunately, the number of diabetics is on the increase. Therefore, okra plant can be used as natural treatment for diabetes.

The medical research concerning okra’s properties regarding the management of diabetes is still in the early phase. Hence, a study showed that okra water bettered the blood sugar levels in pregnant mice with gestational diabetes. Additionally, roasted okra seeds, used in Turkey for treating diabetes for decades, have been proven to influence the lowering of blood sugar levels.

Cut off the head and the part of the tail. Next, chop 2 to 3 slice of the fruit and put them in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, after breakfast, drink the beverage.
