7 Reasons to Start Your Day With a Glass of Lemon Water

You know those “What I Eat in a Typical Day” articles you see in celebrity magazines? It seems like virtually every celebrity—or otherwise notoriously healthy person—references a glass of lemon water as one of their “healthy secrets.” I’ve heard it so many times, but always thought it sounded like a pretty boring way to start the day (and in any case, I figured I’d be a monster if I didn’t have my cup of coffee first thing). But after reading that Health and All You‘s food director Beth Lipton swears by her daily glass of lemon water, I decided to give it a try.

The result? Having a glass of lemon water in the morning really does seem to leave me feeling refreshed, energized and ready to take on the day. The key is to use slightly warm or room temperature water (not ice cold, which can negate the benefits). Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon if you weigh less than 150 pounds or, if you weigh more than 150 pounds, use a whole lemon.

But don’t just take my word for it—here are seven reasons to consider starting your morning with a glass of lemon water:

1. Ward off a cold. Citrus juice can help strengthen your immune system and fend off symptoms of a cold. (h/t health.com)

2. Improve skin. The vitamin C in lemons can help boost collagen production and prevent new wrinkles from forming. (h/t huffingtonpost.com)

3. Kick-start your digestion. Starting your day with a glass of lemon water can wake up your digestive system by flushing out toxins and hydrating your whole body. (h/t wellnessmama.com)

4. Increase energy. If you always start your morning with a cup of coffee, try switching to lemon water instead. You might be surprised at how alert you’ll feel! (h/t lifehack.org)

5. Support liver function. There’s evidence that shows that lemons can help the liver better remove toxins and prevent new infections from forming. (h/t liversupport.com)

6. Boost your brain! Like bananas, lemons contain plenty of potassium, which helps promote brain health. (h/t huffingtonpost.com)

7. Banish bad breath. Lemon juice acts as a disinfectant, getting rid of bad bacteria in your mouth and improving your breath. (h/t bodyandsoul.com.au)
